An affair can be very exciting for the people having the affair, but the participants are often also struggling with how they might have violated their integrity and how to sort out some huge dilemmas. When a spouse who has been betrayed finds out or is told about the affair the devastation is usually dramatic. Clients are in crisis when they call us and we aim to start therapy as soon as possible to help the couple and each individual sort things out.
The successful strategies may involve:
- addressing the traumatic impact of the affair
- examining the context of the affair and finding significance or meaning
- forgiving/letting go and moving on, whether together or separately
